St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram Liqueur 375ml
Allspice dram, also known as pimento dram, has its roots in Jamaica dating back to the 1850s, when local distillers began infusing rum with the island's plentiful pimento berries. The style nearly disappeared from the American market by the late 20th century until Destillerie Purkhart, the Austrian family distillery based in Steyr and led by Günter Purkhart, revived the recipe in 2008. The distillery has produced award winning eaux-de-vie, schnapps, and liqueurs since 1932, and its St. Elizabeth line is imported to the US by Haus Alpenz as part of a broader effort to bring historic Caribbean and European liqueur styles back to modern bars.
St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram is made by macerating whole allspice, called pimento in Jamaica, in smoky Jamaican pot still rum. This single berry, native to the island, carries a flavor that reads like a blend of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pepper all at once, and it fuses with the molasses depth of the rum base during maceration. The liqueur is bottled at 22.5 percent alcohol by volume, a moderate strength suited to its role as a seasoning ingredient rather than a primary pour.
The nose is pungently spiced, led by clove with cinnamon, nutmeg, and dried orange peel underneath, plus caramel and molasses from the rum. On the palate it opens sweet before building into a fuller layering of baking spice, finishing with a slight tingle as the allspice character intensifies and the sweetness fades toward something drier.
