1990 H.M. Borges - Madeira Sercial (750ml)
H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges and remains one of the smallest Madeira houses still in operation, now guided by the fourth generation of the founding family. The company's historic premises in Funchal date to 1924, where its permanent staff continue to source, vinify, and age wines from across the island using long-established methods.
This 1990 vintage Sercial is made entirely from grapes grown on Madeira's north coast, the higher, cooler vineyards traditionally favored for this variety since Sercial ripens slowly and retains the bright acidity the style is known for. The wine was aged for two decades in 650 liter American oak casks, a long maturation that lets the naturally lean, high acid Sercial grape build real depth without losing its characteristic freshness.
The finished wine carries an intense aroma of orange peel, walnut, and honey, layered over years spent in wood. On the palate it is bone dry and remarkably complex, with firm tannins and a bright, cutting acidity that carries through a long finish. Its structure and dryness make it a striking match for salted almonds, aged hard cheeses, or a simple plate of oysters.
