1998 H.M. Borges - Madeira Malmsey Colheita (500ml)

H.M. Borges has been producing Madeira since 1877, when Henrique Menezes Borges began sourcing the island's finest wines for aging and export, and the company remains one of Madeira's smallest and most storied producers. Today it is run by the fourth generation of the founding family from its lodge in Funchal, one of the oldest working wineries still open on the island.

This 1998 Colheita is made from Malvasia, known internationally as Malmsey, the richest and sweetest of Madeira's four classic grape varieties. As with all Colheita wines, the fruit comes from a single harvest year rather than a blend of vintages, and the wine spends decades slowly maturing in cask, developing depth and complexity through the gradual oxidation and gentle warmth typical of traditional Madeira cellars.

The resulting wine glows brown topaz in the glass, with an exotic, layered nose shaped by years of tannin evolution in cask, offering orange peel, tobacco, chocolate, caramel, and toasted almond. On the palate it turns full bodied and lush, balanced by a thread of bright acidity that keeps the richness in check through a long finish. Pour it at the end of a meal alongside dark chocolate or dried figs.
