H.M. Borges has been an independent, family-owned Madeira producer since 1877, when Henrique Menezes Borges began building a reputation for sourcing and aging the island's finest wines. Now run by the fourth generation of the family, the house remains one of the smallest bottlers on Madeira, sourcing grapes from across the island and continuing to vinify and mature its wines in Funchal in the traditional style.

This Colheita, meaning single harvest, is made entirely from Boal grapes from the 2005 vintage, a variety that sits toward the sweeter end of Madeira's style spectrum, medium rich and softer than Sercial or Verdelho. Following fermentation, the wine spent well over a decade slowly maturing in oak, developing depth through the same gradual, heat-driven canteiro process used across the region before bottling.

The finished wine shows a bright amber color with brownish nuances and a pretty, layered bouquet of wild flowers, tea leaves, almonds, and dried fruit built up through years of wood aging. On the palate it turns medium sweet, clean, and elegant, with chocolate and dried fruit carrying through a long, well balanced finish. Serve as a dessert wine alongside baked fruit tarts or a plate of soft cheeses.

88 Points
"Offering up aromas of macadamia nut, paraffin wax, English walnuts and dried fruits, the 2005 Boal Colheita is medium to full-bodied, delicately fleshy and enveloping, with lively acids and a moderately intense but nicely integrated finish."
