H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, making it one of the oldest Madeira wine companies still in operation, and the family-run business remains one of the smallest producers on the island today. Now managed by the fourth generation of the Borges family, the house sources grapes from growers across Madeira and continues to vinify and mature its wines in Funchal using traditional methods.

This Colheita, or single-harvest Madeira, is made entirely from Tinta Negra grapes grown on the steep slopes near Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and along the island's south coast. The fruit is fermented on the skins to allow the tannins time to soften before the wine is transferred into oak casks, where it ages for a minimum of ten years under the traditional canteiro system, a slow, heat-driven maturation process unique to Madeira production.

The finished wine glows a bright amber with orange and yellow reflections, offering aromas of exotic wood, caramel, and toasted almond alongside subtler notes of iodine and tobacco. On the palate it turns full and round, with baked fruit, warm spice, and candied peel carrying through to a rich, layered finish. Serve chilled as an aperitif, or pour alongside sushi or a spiced tropical dessert.
