2009 Broadbent - Madeira Single Cask No. 122 Malvasia (500ml)

Broadbent Selections was founded in 1996 by Bartholomew Broadbent, who built the label on the passion of his father, celebrated wine critic Michael Broadbent, a lifelong champion of Madeira who called it his desert island wine. The Single Cask series represents the most exacting expression of that philosophy, with individual barrels personally selected for their exceptional character rather than blended for consistency. These wines are produced in partnership with Justino's, one of the island's largest and most respected houses, which carries out the winemaking on Broadbent's behalf using stocks the family has sourced over decades.

This bottling comes from a single cask of Malvasia, harvested in 2009 and aged for years in a 650-liter old oak barrel using the traditional oxidative Canteiro process, in which the wine develops its color and concentration through the ambient warmth of the aging lodge rather than mechanical heating. Only 950 bottles were produced from this individual cask, each one reflecting the particular character that single-barrel aging can bring out in Madeira's sweetest classic variety.

The wine is intensely sweet, calling to mind ripe Medjool dates, with a vibrant streak of acidity that keeps the richness in check rather than letting it turn heavy. Gloriously oxidative and deeply layered, it carries notes of caramel and dried fruit through a very long finish, and rewards patience once opened, since there's no rush to finish the bottle. It pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses or a plate of dried figs and walnuts, and stands equally well as a contemplative pour on its own.
