NV Blandy's - Madeira Malmsey 10 Year Old (500ml)
Blandy's holds a singular place in Madeira's history as the only founding family of the island's wine trade still owning and running its original company, a legacy stretching back to 1811 across seven generations. The family remains based on the island today, and its wines are crafted under CEO Chris Blandy with acclaimed winemaker Francisco Albuquerque overseeing production across two dedicated aging sites, the historic Blandy's Wine Lodge in Funchal and a newer winery in Caniçal.
This Malmsey is made from grapes grown primarily around São Jorge on Madeira's northern coast, hand-picked and given a brief period of skin contact before a short, natural-yeast fermentation. Grape spirit is added partway through to halt fermentation and preserve the wine's rich sweetness, and the finished blend matures for a minimum of ten years in seasoned oak under the traditional canteiro system before being fined and bottled without need for decanting.
The wine shows a deep golden-brown amber with copper glints, and its aroma layers fig, raisin, and smoky Lapsang Souchong tea with vanilla fudge and warm baking spice. The palate is full-bodied and sweet, balanced by cleansing acidity, with toffee, maple syrup, and walnut carrying into a long, spiced finish. It pairs beautifully with rich chocolate puddings, cakes, or aged cheese.
