H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, a Funchal trader who devoted his life to sourcing and aging the finest wines from across Madeira. The house is now run by the fourth generation of the family, cousins Helena and Isabel Borges, who continue producing under the same roof their ancestor established. Operations have been centralized since 1924 in a century-old building in central Funchal, where production, aging, and bottling all take place. Borges remains one of only a handful of independent Madeira bottlers still active on the island, buying fruit from small growers it has worked with for generations.

This Malmsey is made from Malvasia grapes grown on volcanic soils at varying elevations around Madeira, hand-pruned and hand-harvested by longtime partner growers. Fermentation is halted early with the addition of grape spirit, preserving natural sweetness, then the wine is aged for fifteen years in oak casks under the estojo, or canteiro, system, relying on the building's own heat and sun exposure to slowly concentrate and develop flavor rather than artificial ovens.

The wine pours a deep golden brown and opens with layered dried fruit, vanilla, and toasted wood aromas. On the palate it is sweet and full bodied, with a long, warming finish carrying notes of toasted almond and baking spice. Its richness makes it a natural match for dark chocolate desserts, aged hard cheeses, or a simple plate of dried figs and walnuts, and it holds up equally well served on its own after a meal.
