H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, a Funchal merchant who devoted himself to sourcing and aging Madeira's finest wines. The house remains one of the smallest producers on the island, still run by the fourth generation of the family, cousins Helena and Isabel Borges, who source grapes from small growers across Madeira and carry out every step of production, aging, and bottling in the company's historic Funchal building. That commitment to old-world scale and craftsmanship has earned Borges a reputation among collectors for some of the island's most sought-after older blends.

This bottling is made entirely from Malvasia grapes grown along Madeira's north coast, fermented in open barrels and fortified with grape spirit partway through fermentation. It is aged in American oak casks and represents an average of thirty years, drawn from some of the oldest vines of this variety still producing in the Borges cellars. The wine develops its color and character through decades of slow oxidative aging rather than the shorter canteiro process used for the house's younger wines.

The wine shows a topaz brown color with orange highlights and an intense, layered nose of exotic wood, honey, tobacco, and toasted almond, with a faint iodine note typical of old Madeira. The palate is rich and complex, carrying dried fruit, vanilla, and a hint of curry spice, with structured acidity and tannin that draw out a very long finish. It rewards being sipped alone after a meal, though it also pairs well with dark chocolate or a firm aged cheese.

94 Points
"The NV Malvasia 30 Year Old is exquisite, wafting from the glass with aromas of walnuts, pecans, mocha, sultanas, rock salt, beeswax and candied peel. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and effortlessly complete, with a satiny-textured attack, ..."
