H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, a Funchal merchant who devoted his career to sourcing and aging the island's best wines. His descendants, cousins Helena and Isabel Borges, now lead the fourth generation of the family from the same historic building in central Funchal where all production, aging, and bottling has taken place since 1924. Among only a handful of independent Madeira bottlers left on the island, Borges continues to rely on longtime relationships with small local growers rather than large estate vineyards.

This Medium Dry expression is typically built from Verdelho and other traditional island varieties, harvested and vinified with careful control of fermentation and temperature. Fortification with grape spirit stops the process partway through, leaving a touch of natural sweetness balanced against the grape's inherent acidity. The wine is then aged for an average of five years in oak barrels, developing its color and character through the island's characteristic slow oxidative process.

The wine shows a clear topaz color with a bouquet of dried fruit, wood, and light spice. On the palate it carries a touch of sweetness alongside pleasant acidity, with flavors of orange peel, honey, and vanilla trailing into a long, balanced finish for its age. It works well as an aperitif and also pairs nicely with cured meats, nuts, or a mild semi-firm cheese.
