NV H.M. Borges - Madeira Sercial 10 Year Old
H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, a Funchal trader who spent his life searching out and aging Madeira's finest wines. Today the house is run by the fourth generation, cousins Helena and Isabel Borges, from the same historic Funchal building where the family has centered every stage of production since 1924. Borges remains one of the smallest and most tradition-bound producers on the island, relying on long-standing relationships with local growers for its fruit rather than owning large vineyard holdings of its own.
This Sercial is made entirely from grapes of that variety, grown along the island's northwest corner near Seixal and Porto Moniz, where cooler, higher-elevation vineyards preserve the grape's naturally bracing acidity. Fermentation is carried out with careful temperature control before fortification with grape spirit halts the process, leaving the wine dry. It is then aged in oak barrels for an average of ten years, developing complexity through the slow, gradual warming typical of the island's traditional methods.
The wine shows a light amber color with golden highlights and a woody, refreshing nose marked by orange, iodine, and toasted nut notes. The palate is dry and well structured, with firm acidity carrying flavors of dried fruit and beeswax through a long finish. It shines as a chilled aperitif and pairs particularly well with olives, toasted almonds, or smoked fish canapés.
