H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, a Funchal trader who spent his life seeking out and aging the island's best wines rather than making them from scratch himself. That tradition of careful selection continues today under fourth-generation cousins Helena and Isabel Borges, who run the house from the same century-old building the company has occupied since 1924. All production, aging, and bottling happen on site in central Funchal, and Borges remains one of only a small handful of independent bottlers left on the island, sourcing grapes from small growers with whom the family has worked for generations.

This Sweet expression is made entirely from Tinta Negra, Madeira's most widely planted grape and the backbone of the island's everyday wines. Fermentation takes place off the skins under controlled temperatures, then is stopped early with the addition of grape spirit to lock in natural sugars. The wine spends five years aging in oak casks, developing color and depth through gradual oxidative aging rather than the extended canteiro process reserved for older, single-variety bottlings.

The wine pours a dark golden amber and offers aromas of toasted oak, dried fruit, and roasted nuts, with a thread of dark berry running underneath. On the palate it is rich and sweet, balanced by a quiet undercurrent of acidity, finishing with notes of chocolate and coffee. It suits spiced cakes, dark chocolate, or a wedge of blue cheese, and works equally well poured on its own after dinner.
