New York Malmsey was one of the founding releases of The Rare Wine Co.'s Historic Series, arriving in 2003 alongside Boston Bual and Charleston Sercial as part of a project the company had begun five years earlier with Barbeito's celebrated library of nineteenth-century Madeira. As the richest and sweetest wine in the lineup, it honors the opulent style once favored by New York's Madeira connoisseurs, standing at the sweeter end of the spectrum alongside Boston's Bual, in contrast to the drier styles preferred further south.

Made from Malvasia, historically considered the richest of Madeira's four classic grape styles, the wine is blended from lots ranging from thirty to sixty years old, a technique that gives it much of the depth and character typically associated with true vintage Madeira. That long aging, combined with careful blending, produces a wine with real structural complexity despite carrying no single vintage date.

The nose is deep and layered, unfolding gingerbread, clove, molasses, and dried fig alongside coffee, toffee, and date, with an earthy, almost truffle-like undertone. On the palate it is full-bodied and concentrated, rich and fleshy, with enough bright acidity to keep the sweetness in check through a long, spiced finish. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, foie gras, or a rich crème brûlée.
