Banhez Joven Espadin & Barril Mezcal 750ml
Banhez is produced by a cooperative of more than 36 Zapotec farming families in San Miguel Ejutla, in the central valley of Oaxaca, a model built on collective ownership rather than a single brand or distillery. This structure allows each family to share in the business while continuing production methods passed down for nearly two centuries. The cooperative's commitment to sustainable, fair trade practices has helped it stand out in a category often dominated by celebrity-backed labels, and the effort has been recognized with a Double Gold win for Best Mezcal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
This joven expression blends 90% Espadín agave with 10% Barril, a wild variety that grows more slowly and adds distinct character to the finished spirit. The piñas are roasted in underground wood-fired pits, then mashed using donkey-pulled tahonas before fermenting in wooden tanks and undergoing small-batch distillation in copper alembic stills. Every stage of the process remains handled by hand, reflecting the same techniques the cooperative's founding families used generations ago.
The nose leans bright and tropical, with pineapple, banana, and a hint of vanilla, while the palate brings a creamy texture layered with stone fruit, roasted agave, and fresh herbs. A light smokiness carries through to the finish, closing with soft pepper and a touch of minerality. Its mild, approachable character makes it a strong entry point for those new to mezcal.
