Clase Azul was founded in 1997 by Arturo Lomeli, who set out to create a premium tequila that honors Mexican heritage and artistry. Unlike many tequila brands, Clase Azul owns and operates its own distillery, Casa Tradición, in San Agustín, in the Jalisco Highlands, under master distiller Viridiana Tinoco, and the brand is as well known for its hand-decorated ceramic bottles as for the liquid inside them.

This plata is made from organic Blue Weber agave harvested at maturity from the region's red volcanic soils. During the jima, the piñas are slow roasted in traditional brick ovens for around 72 hours, then milled to extract the sugars before fermenting with a proprietary house yeast. The spirit is double distilled in copper stills and triple filtered, then bottled unaged so the bright, natural character of the highland agave shows through without any barrel influence.

The nose is fragrant and delicate, with vanilla, cracked pepper, cooked agave, and ripe fruit such as papaya and mango. On the palate the tequila is sweet and very smooth, led by vanilla, caramel, and bright high notes of orange, finishing with lasting sweetness and a gentle peppery warmth.
