Código 1530 was originally built as a tequila brand, developed as a private stock shared among a select circle of families and friends before becoming publicly available, with country music star George Strait among its early investors. The brand's name and logo reference 1530, the year Amatitán was recognized as a city under the Spanish crown and granted its own coat of arms. To expand into mezcal, Código 1530 partnered with a small community of artisanal families in the San Juan del Río region of Oaxaca who have quietly refined their craft for generations, bringing that same single-village sourcing philosophy to this expression.

This Artesanal Mezcal is an ensamble of Espadín and Tobalá agave, roasted in a traditional earthen oven before the cooked piñas are crushed using a burro-pulled tahona. The mash is fermented and then distilled in a copper alembic still, following methods that have changed little over the centuries. What sets this expression apart is its resting period in French oak barrels previously used to age Sauvignon Blanc in Napa Valley, a technique borrowed from Código's tequila program that adds a subtle wine-driven dimension to the finished spirit.

The nose shows floral character alongside light woody vanilla and mandarin citrus, while the palate brings dark cherry, earth, and a mineral-like clay note. The finish carries a gentle wisp of smoke that lingers without overwhelming the fruit and citrus at the spirit's core.

"Codigo 1530 Mezcal Artesanal Joven is an ensamble made from Maguey Espadin (Agave angustifolia) and Maguey Tobala (Agave potatorum) in San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca. The agaves in cooked in a stone oven, crushed by tahona, and distilled in copper pots. The spirit is rested in Sauvignon Blanc wine barrels. Tasting notes include: vanilla, citrus, dark cherry, earth, stone, clay, and smoke."
