El Tesoro is produced at La Alteña Distillery in Arandas, in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, founded by Don Felipe Camarena in 1937. Camarena came from a family that had made tequila in Jalisco since the early 1800s before their original distillery was destroyed during the Mexican Revolution, and he rebuilt the tradition from the ground up, growing and selling agave before eventually opening La Alteña. Today his grandson, Carlos Camarena, serves as master distiller, continuing the family's fiercely artisanal approach.

This reposado is made entirely from 100% estate-grown Blue Weber agave, cooked in traditional stone or brick ovens before being crushed with a tractor-pulled tahona wheel rather than a modern roller mill. Fermentation happens in wood tanks in the open air, allowing wild yeasts from the distillery's surroundings to shape the spirit, one of the few tequila houses still using this method. After two distillations in copper pot stills, the tequila rests for nine to eleven months in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, developing its color and smoky, spiced character.

The nose shows smoky oak alongside grilled fruit, fresh agave, vanilla, and orange blossom honey. On the palate the tequila is rich and juicy, with roasted agave, butterscotch, toasted oak, and light smoke, finishing long and peppery with warming spice and a clean, earthy edge.

"We age our Reposado tequila in American oak ex-bourbon barrels for nine to eleven months. This careful process creates a sweet and smoky flavor, with hints of vanilla and oak.
