Ilegal Mezcal traces its roots to founder John Rexer, who began carrying unbranded bottles of mezcal from small Oaxacan producers to his bar in Guatemala around 2004, eventually building a proper distillery and export label by 2006. The brand grew into one of the best known names in aged mezcal, respected for pioneering barrel-aged expressions in a category historically dominated by unaged joven styles. Bacardi acquired Ilegal after years as a distribution partner, and the brand continues to work with its longtime palenque partners in Oaxaca on small-batch production.

This Reposado is made entirely from Espadín agave, traditionally cooked, crushed, fermented, and distilled at the palenque before aging four to six months in American white oak barrels. For this limited release, the rested mezcal is then transferred into casks that previously held eight-year Caribbean rum, where it finishes for up to two additional months. The secondary maturation layers rum-cask character over the base reposado without masking its agave-forward foundation, a technique Ilegal describes as marrying its house style with Caribbean barrel influence.

The nose offers caramelized pear and orange peel, while the palate brings butterscotch, caramel, and a light wisp of smoke wrapped around warm baking spice. Nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon carry through a rounded, tropical finish with lingering toasted agave sweetness.
