Mezcal Vago Elote Mezcal 750ml
Mezcal Vago began after co-founder Judah Kuper met a family of mezcaleros in Oaxaca, leading to a project built around individual palenques and their distinct family recipes rather than a single house style. Elote is the signature expression of the late Aquilino García López, one of the most respected mezcaleros in the region, and it is now produced by his sons, Temo and Mateo, at the family's palenque in Candelaria Yegolé, Oaxaca, continuing the recipe their father developed.
This mezcal starts as 100% espadín agave, cooked in an in-ground earthen pit and crushed with a traditional tahona before natural fermentation in wooden tanks. What sets Elote apart is its distillation: the spirit is distilled three times, and between the second and third runs, the maestro adds roasted corn harvested from the family's own farm, infusing the final spirit with toasted grain character alongside the traditional agave base.
The nose delivers immediate roasted corn and buttered popcorn aromas layered with dried corn husk and a touch of smoke. On the palate, sweet cooked agave gives way to honeycomb, tropical fruit, and green peppercorn, with bright citrus keeping the profile lively through a floral, earthy finish. This mezcal is well suited to sipping neat, or mixed into a ginger-forward cocktail that plays up its roasted sweetness.
