Mezcal Vago Ensamble en Barro "Tio Rey" Mezcal 750ml
Mezcal Vago launched in 2013 and built its reputation on partnering directly with individual mezcaleros in Oaxaca rather than blending across producers, letting each maker's style define a distinct label. Tío Rey, whose full name is Salomón Rodríguez, works from a longtime family ranch in Gulerá, in the Sola de Vega district, an area regarded among agave growers as producing some of the finest quality in the region. Since 2017, Vago has marked each mezcalero with a different colored label, with Tío Rey's red label identifying his signature clay pot distillations.
This ensamble is a field blend, meaning the mix of agave varieties, typically including Espadín along with Coyote or Mexicano, is combined before roasting rather than assembled afterward, so no two batches taste quite the same. The agave is cooked in an in-ground earthen pit, then hand-crushed with wooden mallets in a process that often becomes a family affair. Fermentation happens naturally, and the mosto is distilled in small clay pots handcrafted in Santa María Atzompa, a method that predates copper stills and imparts a distinctive character.
The nose is rich and earthy, with wet clay, roasted agave, dried fruit, and a touch of citrus. On the palate, dense mesquite smoke meets sweet roasted agave and vegetal minerality, layered with notes of dark chocolate, baked plantain, and warm spice. The finish is long and complex, rewarding slow, patient sipping.
