Mezcal Vago began with a chance meeting when co-founder Judah Kuper, hospitalized during a visit to Oaxaca, fell for the nurse who treated him. Her father, subsistence farmer Aquilino García, also made mezcal, and that connection led Judah and his friend Dylan Sloan to launch the brand in 2013, exporting their first bottles to Texas that same year. Emigdio Jarquín Ramírez joined the Vago family of mezcaleros and quickly built a reputation across the Miahuatlán region for his exceptional command of wild Karwinskii agave varieties, earning his own blue label when Vago began color-coding releases by producer in 2017.

This expression is made from Madrecuixe, a wild agave within the Karwinskii family known for its slow growth and concentrated character. Emigdio crushes the roasted piñas by tahona and distills the mash in a copper refrescadera still, a technique common to the Ejutla and Miahuatlán region that uses a coiled condenser bathed in cool water to shape the spirit's texture. As with all Vago releases, no additives are used at any stage, and batches can vary slightly depending on harvest and cut.

The nose is grassy and earthy, layered with floral notes and a hint of black licorice. On the palate, more florals emerge alongside a chalky minerality, raspberry, and a savory, almost cheese-like note, finishing with grilled artichoke and a long, vegetal complexity that reflects Emigdio's mastery of wild agave.

"Agave Madrecuixe is one of several varieties in the Agave Karwinskii family. Between the different sub-varieties, there are different ratios of stalk to piña, which can affect the final flavor. The starches in the stalk are structured differently, such that they do not always break down completely during the roasting process. As such, mezcals from these varieties can result in mezcales that do have a core of agave sweetness that most connoisseurs will recognize, but there is also an overall dry or starchy quality to the mezcales that can linger on the palate. Madrecuixe typically has a larger piña than most, resulting in mezcales that do have that starchy finish, but a touch more sweetness and body than a more narrow plant like a Cuixe."
