The Bitter Truth was founded in Munich, Germany in 2006 by bartenders Stephan Berg and Alexander Hauck, who began making their own bitters by hand after struggling to source classic styles behind the bar. Drawing on Berg's extensive personal collection of historical bitters, the pair set out to revive lost cocktail recipes and released their first three products, including this Aromatic Bitters, within months of founding the company.

Old Time Aromatic Bitters is made in Germany from a base of natural herbs and spices steeped in high-proof alcohol, with water, beet sugar, and caramel coloring rounding out the formula. The recipe sits within the oldest category of cocktail bitters, tracing back to late eighteenth century tradition, and was developed through maceration in the same handmade style Berg and Hauck used before founding the company, bottled at 39% alcohol by volume.

The nose carries clove and gingerbread spice with a subtle tutti frutti sweetness underneath, while the palate brings forward cinnamon, cardamom, and anise in a dense, warming blend. The overall character is rich and old fashioned, built to stand up to barrel aged spirits and add real depth rather than a light seasoning touch.
