Luxardo Bitter Rosso Liqueur 750ml
Luxardo traces its roots to 1821, when Girolamo Luxardo established the family distillery in Zara, a Dalmatian port city now part of Croatia. After the family relocated to Torreglia in Italy's Veneto region following the Second World War, the business remained entirely family owned and is today run by the sixth generation of Luxardos. While the house built its early reputation on maraschino liqueur, it has produced a range of aperitivo-style bitters for well over a century, with Bitter Rosso standing as one of its longest-running expressions.
First introduced in 1885, Bitter Rosso is built from separate infusions of bitter herbs, aromatic plants, and citrus fruits steeped in water and alcohol, including sweet and bitter orange, rhubarb, wormwood, gentian, quinine, mint, marjoram, and thyme, among other botanicals. Each infusion is prepared individually before being blended according to the Luxardo family's original recipe, then filtered and bottled. The finished liqueur is bottled at 25% alcohol by volume and is both vegan friendly and kosher certified.
Bitter Rosso pours a bright, saturated red and opens with herbal and citrus aromas layered over notes of gentian and wormwood. The palate carries syrupy sweetness balanced against pronounced quinine bitterness, with blood orange zest, a touch of cherry, and a lingering herbaceous, slightly peppery finish.
