Scrappy's Bitters - Grapefruit Bitters 5oz
Scrappy's Bitters was founded in Seattle in 2008 by bartender Miles Thomas, who spent years studying botanicals and extraction techniques before launching what became one of the first commercially produced New American bitters brands. That distinction has stuck with the company as it grew into a defining name in the modern bitters revival, still processing and bottling every ingredient by hand at its original Seattle location. Scrappy's has built its reputation on sourcing whole herbs, spices, and hand-zested citrus rather than relying on oils or flavor extracts, a slower but more direct route to flavor that runs through the entire product line.
Grapefruit Bitters pairs freshly zested grapefruit peel with gentian root, a traditional bittering agent long used in classic bitters recipes. Following the Scrappy's method, the grapefruit is zested by hand rather than extracted with oils, then combined with gentian and macerated to draw out a fully rounded, natural bitterness. The finished product is bottled at 44 percent alcohol by volume, giving the citrus enough concentration to carry through a wide range of cocktails without disappearing.
The nose is bright and true to fresh grapefruit, with supporting notes of lemon and orange zest adding lift. On the palate the citrus stays vivid and juicy, while the gentian brings a warm, herbal bitterness that keeps the flavor from reading as purely sweet or sour. The finish is smooth and well balanced, with a lingering bite that makes the bitters equally suited to bright, citrus-driven drinks and richer, spirit-forward ones.
