Bottled from a single vineyard in La Morra, the 2018 Barolo Monvigliero (750ml) captures the distinct calcareous marl and granite influence of the Langhe hills in Piedmont. Harvested during a notably warm 2018 growing season, the Nebbiolo grapes reached full phenolic ripeness before an extended hang time preserved their natural acidity, yielding a red wine that balances serious structure with immediate approachability. The result is a clearly defined expression of the Monvigliero cru, built for both contemporary enjoyment and slow cellar development.

Distributed aromatics of crushed sour cherry, dried fig, and violet give way to deeper layers of cedar bark, dried tobacco, and wet river stone. The palate tracks those same fruit and earth elements with a polished, rounded mouthfeel. Fine-grained tannins provide necessary backbone without drying the finish, which carries lingering herbal bitterness and a clean mineral echo. Cellared properly, this vintage will continue integrating secondary complexity for up to a decade. Serve at 62–65°F (16–18°C) and decant for 30 minutes to fully oxygenate the wine before pouring.

Tasting Profile

  • Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo
  • Region: Monvigliero cru, La Morra (Barolo DOCG), Piedmont
  • Vintage Characteristics: Warm growing conditions produced ripe fruit expression with supple tannic structure and vibrant mid-palate freshness
  • Serving Temperature: 62–65°F (16–18°C)

Suggested Food Pairings

  • Traditional agnolotti del plin with brown butter and sage
  • Braised short ribs or slow-cooked lamb shoulder
  • Wild mushroom risotto or pasta with black truffle shavings
  • Hard-aged piemontese cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Toma
95 Points
"The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero shows a beautiful signature of pressed violets, rose garden, white stone, crushed peppercorn and grilled rosemary. The wine is smooth and soft in texture, yet it feels stitched up and firm at the back thanks to the support it gets from those balanced tannins. This wine should hold 20 years or more."
