2018 Sorpasso - Carema DOC
Cultivated on the exposed granite and gneiss terraces of Carema in Piedmont’s western foothills, the 2018 Sorpasso captures the precise signature of Picotendro, the indigenous name for Nebbiolo. Planted between 400 and 700 meters above sea level, the vines endure a sharp continental microclimate that slows ripening and concentrates flavor, resulting in a vintage defined by crisp acidity, refined tannic structure, and pronounced minerality.
The wine displays a translucent ruby core, opening with restrained aromatics of wild red berries, dried rose petal, and crushed pine needles. A gentle swirl releases secondary layers of toasted hazelnut, graphite, and faint herbal tea. Mid-palate, the texture is medium-weight with supple, well-integrated tannins that give way to a savory finish of sour cherry, cured earth, and saline stone. Decanting for 40 to 60 minutes allows the youthful structure to soften and reveal deeper complexity.
This Carema DOC pairs best with dishes that complement its elevated acidity and earthy backbone. Serve alongside roasted leg of lamb with rosemary, wild boar ragù, saffron-infused risotto with seasonal mushrooms, or shaved hard cheeses such as Bramata or Toma di Alpeggio. Store horizontally at 55°F to 58°F; while enjoyable today, it will reward cellaring for five to eight years. Serve at 60°F to 64°F for optimal aromatic expression.
