The 2019 Azelia Barolo Margheria offers a structured, age-worthy expression of Nebbiolo built around concentrated fruit and prominent mineral undertones. Grown on Azelia’s biodynamically farmed slopes in Castiglione Falletto, this single-vineyard wine captures the consistent ripening and vibrant acidity that defined the acclaimed 2019 Piedmont vintage.

Nebbiolo vines mature in calcareous marl soils, producing wines defined by their classic aromatic hierarchy. The bouquet opens with crushed wild strawberries, dried rose petals, and black pepper before settling into cedar, cured leather, and fine stone dust. The palate balances firm tannins and bright acidity, framing flavors of red currant, tobacco, and savory herbs. The finish remains long and dry, providing a clear framework for five to fifteen years of cellar development.

This Barolo pairs effectively with rich, protein-heavy dishes that complement its tannic grip and high acid structure. Traditional Piedmontese preparations work best, including braised short ribs, wild boar ragù, or agnolotti filled with mixed meats. Aging cheeses such as twenty-four-month Parmigiano-Reggiano or Castelmagno also integrate well with the wine’s minerality. Aeration improves the presentation; let the bottle sit for ten to fifteen minutes before pouring, and serve at fifty-eight to sixty-two degrees Fahrenheit.

95+ Points
"Azelia makes three wines with fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, including San Rocco, Cerretta and this wine. There is also a Riserva from Bricco Voghera. The 2019 Barolo Margheria comes from a southwest facing slope opposite the Perno Vineyard. The site has very poor soils with white clay, and the vines (aged 65 years old on average) are forced to push their roots very deep as a result. This wine has a tight and very firm personality with dark fruit, rusty nail, dusty mineral and tight structure. Those rusty mineral aromas give it away as Serralunga d'Alba. This is an age-worthy wine, with 5,900 bottles released."
