The 2021 Vietti Barolo Rocche di Castiglione delivers a precise 100 percent Nebbiolo expression from La Morra, highlighting the cooler vintage’s signature freshness alongside the vineyard’s classic structural foundation.

Situated in the designated zone of Rocche dell’Annunziata, the site’s calcareous marl soils and afternoon sun exposure promote consistent sugar accumulation while retaining vibrant acidity. Vietti’s selection protocol focuses on low-yield clusters taken late in the season, resulting in a wine that emphasizes aromatic transparency and fiber-like tannins rather than heavy extraction. This single-vineyard bottling performs reliably across both young drinking windows and several years of cellar development.

Tasting notes center on compressed red and black fruit—sour cherry, blackberry, and plum leather—woven with floral accents of dried rose, violet, and subtle white pepper. Mid-palate characteristics of crushed stone, iron, and cured tobacco emerge as the wine opens, supported by a firm mineral backbone and a long, saline finish.

Suggested food pairings highlight the wine’s capacity to cut through richness while complementing earthy, savory flavors. Slow-braised lamb shanks, wild boar ragù, and bone marrow risotto align naturally with the tannin structure. Mushroom-heavy pasta dishes and aged Piedmontese cheeses such as Castelmagno or mild Pecorino also integrate smoothly. Decanting for twenty to thirty minutes before serving allows the younger vintage’s tight aromatic compounds to fully unfold.

98+ Points
"his is a serious beauty that reminds us of the brilliant work underway at this leading estate. Yes, ownership has changed over recent years, but this wine remains "Rocche-solid." From an epic vintage, the Vietti 2021 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a classic with those elegant mineral notes of glacial till and flake salt followed by carefully ripened fruit, blackcurrant and a finely tuned floral note of fragrant tea leaf that hits the high notes. The effect is ethereal but also precise. Fruit comes from two parcels, one planted in 1958 and the other in 1969, and the blend is half of each fermented together. Fruit was picked on October 1st, and the wine saw 24 days on the skins. The first year this wine was produced is 1961. The Rocche di Castiglione site has 35% sand with marl soils that continue to evolve, kicking out more new sand. Only 3,728 bottles exist, and that's the bad news."
