1992 Penfolds - South Australia Grange Bin 95 (750ml)
The 1992 Penfolds Grange Bin 95 is one of Australia's most iconic red wines, a bold and complex Shiraz that has earned its place among the world's great cellar treasures. Officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia, Grange is recognized as one of the most consistent of the world's great wines, built on Penfolds' signature multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy. The 1992 vintage is a blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, and McLaren Vale, and matured for 18 months in new American oak barrels.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, dense, dark brick-red color with purple crimson hues. The bouquet displays the hallmarks of classic Grange: abundant, sweet, ripe berried fruit coupled with balanced, integrated oak. With time in the glass, alluring tobacco, smoked roasted nuts, and concentrated blackcurrant nuances emerge. The palate delivers concentrated blackberry, dark cherry, and dark chocolate alongside malty vanilla oak notes, with fine, loose-knit chalky tannins, smoky fresh tobacco, and pronounced acidity. Wine Spectator described it as "ripe, smoky and spicy, a wine of extraordinary subtlety and complexity, powerful without showing too much muscle," awarding it 94 points.
A sturdy, well-structured Grange with the power and concentration for further cellaring, the wine is drinking well now and is expected to peak through 2040. It pairs beautifully with rich beef preparations and aged cheeses.
