2021 Casa Ferreirinha - Douro Tinto Papa Figos (750ml)
Named for the golden oriole, the migratory bird known in Portuguese as the "papa figos" or "fig muncher," this expressive Douro red from Casa Ferreirinha is a brilliant introduction to one of Portugal's most storied wine estates.
The blend is composed of 30% Tinta Barroca, 30% Tinta Roriz, 25% Touriga Franca, and 15% Touriga Nacional, sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Douro Superior region, with approximately 25% of the fruit coming from the prestigious Quinta da Leda estate near the Spanish border. The predominantly schist soils fracture vertically, allowing vine roots to reach deep for water and nutrients throughout the growing season, lending the wine a distinctive mineral backbone.
In the glass, the wine is ruby red with violet nuances. The nose bursts with aromas of juicy strawberries, blackberries, and cherries, interwoven with notes of peppery spice and tobacco. On the palate, the wine shows good volume and a rounded texture, with primary fruit flavors, a fresh backbone, and fine length. Velvety tannins provide a smooth mouthfeel, while lively acidity balances the ripe fruit and carries it onto the lingering finish.
Founded in 1952, Casa Ferreirinha pioneered the quality revolution in Douro still wines and was the first producer in the region dedicated entirely to making table wine rather than Port. The 2021 Papa Figos is an outstanding everyday Douro red, ideal for weeknight drinking yet complex enough to impress. Pair it with poultry, game, various meats, smoked pork, or aged cheese.
