One of Montalcino's most storied estates, situated in the prized southeastern corner of the appellation near Castelnuovo dell'Abate — the same neighborhood as Ciacci Piccolomini and Argiano — where the warmer, more mineral-rich soils produce Brunellos of exceptional depth and structure. Now part of the Illy family portfolio and guided by winemaker Andrea Machetti. Aged 36 months in Allier oak before release, the 2021 opens with an incredibly rich and aromatic nose — powdery tannins mingling with red fruits and a delicate whisper of earthiness with subtle sweet oak in the background. Aromas of black cherries, orange peel, and crushed stones on the nose; medium-bodied with juicy fruit, a flavorful finish, and an almost sandy, terra cotta character that is quintessentially Montalcino. 2021 is widely regarded as one of the finest recent Brunello vintages — elegant and precise rather than massive, with the structure to age gracefully for decades. Drink 2028–2045

95 Points
"Complex and shapely, the Mastrojanni 2021 Brunello di Montalcino shows fluid contours that evolve with each swirl of the glass before settling into notes of cassis, dark cherry, spice, grenadine and grilled watermelon. The palate carries energy and brightness over a medium-to full-bodied frame, finishing with a subtle mineral saltiness that adds lift and definition. This classic village expression draws fruit from 14.4 hectares across varied soils, exposures and elevations, resulting in a balanced and expressive wine that remains very much in evolution."
