2022 Domaine de Montille - Beaune Greves (750ml)

Domaine de Montille is based in Volnay in the Côte de Beaune, long led by the late Hubert de Montille, who took over the family estate at just seventeen and became one of Burgundy's most respected vignerons. His children, Étienne and Alix, have run the domaine since his death in 2014, farming about thirty-seven hectares organically, certified biodynamic since 2012, across some of the Côte d'Or's finest sites.

Beaune Grèves is a premier cru just south of Vignes de l'Enfant Jésus, and de Montille's 1.26-hectare parcel sits on iron-rich clay over sandy limestone, planted with vines around fifty years old. The grapes are hand harvested and roughly forty percent are kept as whole clusters, fermented with a mix of punch-downs and pump-overs. The wine ages in French oak, with a modest portion new, before bottling.

The 2022 shows ripe plum and dark cherry fruit with a savory, gamey edge and a firm, saline undercurrent, lifted by notes of violet and warm spice. The palate is structured yet silky, with fine, talc-like tannins carrying through a long finish. Still youthful, it will reward a few years in the cellar and pairs well with roast guinea fowl, braised venison, or Époisses.
