2022 Domaine des Lambrays - Clos des Lambrays (750ml)
Clos des Lambrays traces its history to the fourteenth century, when the vineyard belonged to the Abbey of Cîteaux, though it fell into disrepair after the Revolution and only regained Grand Cru status in 1981 after decades of restoration. The Freund family owned the estate from 1996 until LVMH acquired it in 2014, its first Burgundy property. Today the near-monopole is farmed organically under winemaker Jacques Devauges.
Clos des Lambrays covers nearly nine hectares just south of Clos de Tart, split into three distinct lieux-dits with vines averaging around forty years old, some over ninety. The 2022 blends eleven cuvées and was fermented with about eighty percent whole clusters in wooden vats over a three-week maceration. The wine then ages some sixteen to eighteen months in barrel, roughly a fifth new.
This is a deep ruby-purple wine with a perfumed nose of red berries, rose, forest floor, and a whisper of spice. The palate is medium-bodied yet precise, with fine, polished tannins and a chalky, mineral-rich finish that lingers. Still very young, it rewards patient cellaring and pairs beautifully with roast pigeon, beef Wellington, or a rich hare stew.
