2022 Jacques Carillon - Puligny Montrachet
The Carillon family has made wine in Puligny-Montrachet since the sixteenth century, tracing back to Jehan Carillon, recorded as a vintner in the village in 1520. Jacques Carillon joined the family domaine in 1980 after training at the winemaking school in Beaune, and in 2010 the historic estate was split between him and his brother, François. Jacques and his wife, Sylvia, then founded their own domaine of about 5.25 hectares.
This village Puligny-Montrachet is assembled from eleven small parcels across seven lieux-dits scattered throughout the appellation, with vines averaging around forty years old. Jacques ferments and ages the wine with a restrained hand, using only about fifteen percent new oak on a six-year barrel rotation, letting the appellation's limestone character shine through rather than being masked by wood.
Pale gold in the glass, the wine offers lemon zest, green apple, and white peach, layered with acacia blossom and a hint of toasted almond and wet stone. The palate is medium-bodied and creamy, with vibrant acidity carrying citrus and orchard fruit to a long, precise, mineral finish.
