The Mauritson family has been farming in Sonoma County since the 19th century, and Clay Mauritson has made wine under his own name since the 1990s. Based in Healdsburg, Clay and Carrie Mauritson created the Loam Single Soil Wines project to bottle limited releases of Cabernet Sauvignon from some of the family's finest vineyards.

The 2022 Mauritson Loam Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Sonoma County vineyards planted in Positas, Suther, and Clough soils. Of the 23 loam types the family farms for Cabernet, these three earned the winemaker's grand cru distinction. Loose clusters brought naturally lower yields in 2022, and early September heat raised concerns about sugar levels. The wine was aged for 16 months in 100% French oak, with only 171 cases produced at 14.57% alcohol.

This Sonoma County Cabernet opens with crushed black cherry and blueberry, joined by violet blossom, vanilla pod, warm pie crust, and layers of dried herbs. Fresh acidity and silky tannins keep the wine energetic and approachable in its youth, while its structure supports cellaring for ten years or more.
