2022 Mongeard-Mugneret - Grands Echezeaux (750ml)
The Mongeard family has lived in Vosne-Romanée since 1620, though the modern domaine took shape when Eugène Mongeard married Edmée Mugneret in the 1920s, uniting both families' vineyard holdings. Their grapes were sold to négociants until 1945, when son Jean began estate-bottling on the advice of the noted vigneron Henri Gouges. Today grandson Vincent Mongeard runs the roughly thirty-hectare domaine, which spans some thirty-five appellations across the Côte d'Or.
This Grands-Echezeaux comes from just over a hectare of old vines, ranging from forty to seventy years old. The grapes are destemmed and given a cool soak of four to five days before fermentation, then aged eighteen to twenty-two months in barrel, with up to seventy percent new oak for this top grand cru site, before bottling unfiltered.
The wine shows violets and fresh cherry, with dark fruit, bergamot, dried rose, and sweet spice over notes of wet forest floor. Full-bodied and silky, it carries real density beneath a harmonious, refined structure, with a long, layered finish.
