2023 Domaine Arlaud - Bourgogne Rouge Roncevie (750ml)
Domaine Arlaud traces back to 1942, when Joseph Arlaud, originally from the Ardèche, married Renée Amiot, whose family brought deep Burgundian roots and choice vineyard parcels into the union. Their son Hervé expanded the estate from 1983, and today it is led by his grandson Cyprien, who began farming biodynamically in 1997 and earned full certification in 2014. Based in Morey-Saint-Denis, the domaine still ages part of its wine in a fourteenth-century cellar in Nuits-Saint-Georges, even after moving primary operations to a modern facility.
Roncevie is a lieu-dit in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, right beside the Griottes-Chambertin grand cru, though a 1964 boundary revision left the Arlaud family's parcel outside the village appellation while neighboring plots kept the Gevrey name. The vines here are over sixty years old, rooted in clay-limestone soils enriched with Bresse marl. Grapes are mostly destemmed, fermented with native yeasts, and aged largely in used casks before bottling unfined and unfiltered.
The wine shows ripe cherry, wild strawberry, and redcurrant, with a floral trace of iris and a supple, firmly tannic structure that carries real freshness. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, coq au vin, or a rustic beef stew.
