2023 Francois Lumpp - Givry BLANC Crausot (750ml)
François Lumpp has worked vines in Givry since 1977, striking out on his own in 1991 after splitting from his brother's operation. Over more than two decades he became one of the appellation's defining figures, helping push Givry's reputation to a level rarely associated with the Côte Chalonnaise. The estate now covers roughly ten hectares, farmed entirely within the appellation, and has passed into the hands of the next generation: Pierre, his sister Anne Cécile in the cellar, and her partner Nicolas in the vineyard, all still guided by François and his wife Isabelle.
Crausot is a relatively young premier cru, only recognized in the 1990s, sitting at the appellation's southern edge on notably calcareous, mineral-driven soil. Lumpp's small half-hectare plot splits between a south-facing section on stony limestone and an east-facing one on sandier ground. The wine ferments and ages in oak, including some newer 400-liter barrels chosen specifically to keep the whites fresh rather than heavy.
The glass shows pale gold with ripe citrus, white pear, and fresh hazelnut, lifted by a chalky, floral edge. The palate is taut and elegant, with real mineral drive. Pair it with steamed mussels, poached chicken, or a young goat cheese.
