Matanzas Creek Winery was founded in 1977 by Sandra MacIver, who brought on a young Merry Edwards as founding winemaker, in what was then a largely overlooked corner of Sonoma County called Bennett Valley. The winery's early Sauvignon Blancs helped establish the variety's reputation in California and eventually contributed to Bennett Valley earning its own AVA status. Now part of Jackson Family Wines, Matanzas Creek continues that legacy under winemaker Marcia Torres Forno, who has led the program since 2010 and built her reputation on precise, aromatics driven winemaking.

This bottling blends fruit from twelve different vineyard sites across Sonoma County, each picked, fermented, and evaluated separately before being combined into the final wine. Torres Forno times harvest to capture different aromatic stages, picking some blocks early for citrus and herbal lift and others later for riper stone fruit character, then uses a mix of fermentation vessels, including stainless steel, oak, and concrete, to preserve those layered aromatics. The blend finishes at 98 percent Sauvignon Blanc with a small addition of Sémillon.

The glass shows a pale straw color, with aromas of citrus pith, white flowers, pear, and mango. The palate opens with a touch of white pepper spice before settling into a delicate, melon toned finish. Serve it with ceviche, herb crusted chicken, or a citrus dressed green salad.

90 Points
"This estate previously focused on reds but has now shifted almost entirely toward aromatic whites. Tropical, elegant, and fresh, the 2024 Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County pours a pale silver/yellow hue and offers notes of salted grapefruit, melon, starfruit, and delicate tropical flowers. Medium-bodied, it’s refreshing and pure, with almost cocktail-like citrus charm and excellent value. Drink 2026-2029."
