Château de Saint Cosme is one of the great names of the Rhône Valley — a family estate in Gigondas with roots stretching back to Roman times and in the hands of the Barruol family since 1570. Under Louis Barruol, who converted the estate to biodynamic farming in 2010, Saint Cosme has become a trusted source not only for Gigondas, but for some of the Northern Rhône's most elegant négociant wines, including this Condrieu.

Pure Viognier, sourced from the appellation's celebrated granitic slopes, the 2023 is a textbook expression of what makes Condrieu so seductive. Aromas of dried apricot, peach, and orange blossom mingle with fennel, anise, and elderflower  — the wine's perfume alone is worth the price of admission. Louis Barruol's philosophy is one of restraint: fully ripe fruit is essential to unlocking Viognier's potential, but balance is the goal. Twelve months on fine lees in used Burgundian barrels  gives the palate a rich, textured quality without overwhelming the wine's freshness. White peach and melon are edged by mint and a long, blossomy finish.

Drink now through 2029, ideally alongside lobster, scallops in cream sauce, roasted chicken, or a rich fish preparation.

94 Points
"Starts off plump and round, with star fruit, pink grapefruit and fennel, and then quickly takes on a restrained, racy edge, with celery seed and blanched almond cruising alongside smoky, salty flintiness. Offers great tension and freshness, with the silky palate still tightly wound. There are touches of acacia and white flowers on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 90 cases imported."
