2023 Tenuta Santa Maria Rosso Pràgal, IGT Veronese (750ml)

The Bertani family's history in the Valpolicella region dates to official documents from the mid-1500s, and it was brothers Gaetano and Giovanni Battista Bertani who in the latter half of the 1800s set out to establish a new benchmark for Veronese winemaking — introducing revolutionary vine-growing techniques and becoming the first in the region to bottle and sell Valpolicella, Ripasso, and Soave on a larger scale. Today, Tenuta Santa Maria is the family's personal estate, and the Pràgal is their most approachable and distinctive label.

The Pràgal is a fruity, spicy blend of Corvina with Merlot and Syrah. The Merlot and Syrah are harvested in September and vinified immediately, while the Corvina is picked in October and left to dry for a month before fermenting on the skins for approximately three weeks — a nod to the appassimento tradition — then aged six months in large oak barrels before the varieties are assembled.

The result is a vibrant, medium-bodied red with velvety tannins, good acidity, and a fresh, savory finish — very Veneto, very versatile, and built for the table
