Hudson Vineyard has long been one of the most sought after Chardonnay sources in Carneros, and Mark Aubert waited roughly a decade before securing an allocation of its fruit. That patience reflects the broader philosophy behind Aubert Wines, founded in the late 1990s by Mark and his wife Teresa after years spent honing his craft under Helen Turley at Peter Michael Winery. Rather than expanding quickly, the estate has built its reputation site by site, adding only the vineyards that meet its exacting standard for character and intensity.

Growing and Production

Hudson sits along a northern stretch of Carneros where the soils run thin and rocky, forcing the vineyard's old vines to struggle even to produce modest yields. That natural stress concentrates flavor in the fruit, giving the finished wine unusual depth for the appellation. As with the rest of the Aubert range, the wine is made with a light touch in the cellar, aiming to preserve the site's soil driven character rather than layering on heavy oak influence.

Tasting Notes

The 2024 vintage is oily and viscous in texture, opening with juicy pear, honeydew, and allspice, followed by marzipan, beeswax, and a whisper of baked apple tart. Full bodied and tightly knit, the palate carries a crisp mineral backbone through a long, satiny finish with real electricity. It pairs wonderfully with roasted chicken, seared halibut, or a rich butternut squash soup.

97 Points
"The 2024 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard is initially reserved, opening with notes of Marcona almond, candle wax, and flinty reduction. With air, the fruit expands to reveal ripe peach, melon, salted pineapple rind, and oily richness. Charming and approachable, it combines generosity with freshness and should benefit from another year or two in bottle. Drink 2026-2038."
