Tragugnano is the estate’s finest expression of Orvieto — a single-vineyard wine produced from a careful selection of the oldest and best-exposed Grechetto and Procanico vines on the property. Giuseppe Mottura regards the Tragugnano vineyard with the reverence the Burgundians reserve for their grand crus. The vines, planted in 1990 on soils of 40% clay, 40% sand, and 20% silt in a mainly volcanic zone influenced by the Vulsini mountains and Lake Bolsena, yield grapes of exceptional concentration and aromatic depth.

Grapes are harvested and sorted by hand — Grechetto in early September, Procanico in early October — and vinified separately. After gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel, the two varieties are assembled and rest on fine lees for six months, gaining texture and complexity. The 2024 vintage opens with straw yellow and golden highlights, offering warm aromas of wild mustard flower, vanilla, wild mint, sage, thyme, and delicate resinous notes. Dry yet soft on the palate, it carries considerable body and complexity, with the capacity to age gracefully for several years.

Mario Soldati, the great Italian writer, described authentic Orvieto as “unique and treacherous” (rare). Tragugnano unquestionably belongs to what he called the “less Tasting it is like listening to an old traditional song in which every note is perfectly in its place, a song you never want to end.
