2025 Sophie Schaal - Pinot Noir (750ml)
Originally from Burgundy, Sophie Schaal settled in Hunawihr, a few kilometers north of Colmar, where she and her husband Julien founded Domaine Schaal after a trip to South Africa reshaped their approach to winemaking. In 2020 she began making her own cuvées, with a precise, fruit-focused style that has made her one of the rising names in Alsace.
This Alsace Pinot Noir comes from two old vineyards farmed organically, where deep-rooted vines grow on calcareous soils. In Alsace, the grape tends to be fruitier and juicier than its Burgundian counterparts, with finer tannins and fresh acidity. The grapes are hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and fermented with native yeasts, then aged for 10 months in neutral French oak barrels before bottling without fining. The certified organic wine finishes at 12.5% alcohol.
Bright redcurrant and red cherry lead the nose, with floral raspberry and a touch of spice. The palate is light, elegant, and savory, with juicy, fresh fruit, a light tannin frame, and a moreish finish. Easy and joyful to drink, it is best enjoyed over the next few years, through 2029.
