Founded in 1890 in the town of Haro, La Rioja Alta S.A. ranks among the most historic and respected producers in the region. The estate maintains its own in-house cooperage, crafting the American oak barrels used for aging its wines, a practice that has become central to the winery's identity and its reputation for uncompromising quality. Viña Alberdi has long served as the house's calling card, a wine that stays true to tradition while reflecting decades of refinement.

This Reserva is crafted entirely from Tempranillo, sourced from high-altitude, limestone-rich vineyards over forty years old around Rodezno and Labastida. Following fermentation in stainless steel, the wine ages for two years in American oak, spending its first year in new barrels and its second in older ones. This layered approach builds structure gradually while allowing the fruit to retain its brightness rather than being overwhelmed by wood.

The wine opens with ripe cherry, red plum, and raspberry, framed by vanilla, coconut, and warm baking spice, along with hints of tobacco and cedar. On the palate it is fresh and precise, with silky, well-integrated tannins and lively acidity carrying through to a long, harmonious finish. It pairs wonderfully with grilled lamb, roasted chicken, or a rich seafood paella.

92 Points
"The younger wine here is the 2020 Viña Alberdi, a versatile version of the Haro reds. It was produced with Tempranillo fermented in stainless steel and matured in American oak barrels for two years (it's sold as Reserva in international markets and Crianza in Spain). It has 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.6 and five grams of acidity. It has a classical nose of ripe fruit, American oak and spices, the subtle notes of forest floor, still young. The palate is velvety and very balanced with polished tannins. Approachable but should also age. 650,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023."
