From one of Rioja's most storied and respected houses—founded in Haro in 1890, with its own cooperage crafting the American oak barrels that define the estate's signature style. Rioja Alberdi Reserva draws from 40+ year old vines in Mayorita, El Bardal, El Rebollar, and Alto del Rey, planted on clay-limestone soils at 500–600 meters elevation in Rodezno and Labastida; fermented in stainless steel and matured two years in American oak.

Origin and winemaking

  • Historic Rioja Alta house with its own cooperage shaping the wine's oak-forward profile.
  • Vineyards: Mayorita, El Bardal, El Rebollar, and Alto del Rey, 40+ year old vines on clay-limestone soils at 500–600 m elevation in Rodezno and Labastida.
  • Vinification: Fermented in stainless steel and aged two years in American oak.

Aroma and palate

Intense garnet with raspberries, wild strawberries, and redcurrants on the nose, wrapped in balsamic aromas of caramel, vanilla, toffee, and roasted coffee. On the palate, the wine is long, balanced, and fresh with fine, silky tannins, and a finish where the bright red fruit and balsamic character reappear.

Style

Classical, juicy, and elegant.

Food pairings

Best served with dishes that let red fruit-forward notes and balsamic character shine.

92 Points
"The younger wine here is the 2020 Viña Alberdi, a versatile version of the Haro reds. It was produced with Tempranillo fermented in stainless steel and matured in American oak barrels for two years (it's sold as Reserva in international markets and Crianza in Spain). It has 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.6 and five grams of acidity. It has a classical nose of ripe fruit, American oak and spices, the subtle notes of forest floor, still young. The palate is velvety and very balanced with polished tannins. Approachable but should also age. 650,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023."
