The Calling was founded by broadcaster Jim Nantz and wine industry veteran Peter Deutsch, two friends who bonded over a calling in life, whether behind a microphone or behind a family wine business. This 2021 bottling is rooted in the Estrella District of Paso Robles, a broad valley floor and floodplain where ridgelines frame the landscape and the Estrella River threads through the vines. Maritime breezes and downslope winds temper warm days, while alluvial soils ranging from sandy to clay loam provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Crafted under the guidance of James MacPhail, 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from this vintage undergoes a cold soak followed by small-batch fermentation and is aged for 18 months in French oak. The result is a wine with depth, balance, and a sense of place that’s unmistakably Paso Robles.
- Nose: Deep plum red wine with layers of ripe blackberry, mocha, warm vanilla spice, and a hint of nutmeg.
- Palate: Bold yet refined flavors of cherry pie and coffee lead to a spicy, warm oak finish, supported by soft, approachable tannins.
