2022 Aries Chardonnay from Marine Layer Wines is the gateway into a cool-climate Chardonnay lineup that highlights Sonoma Coast’s evolving expression. Drawn from a thoughtful blend of Green Valley and Petaluma Gap fruit, along with Marine Layer Vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills, this wine captures the region’s signature fog-driven mornings and evenings, which slow ripening and preserve vibrant acidity while flavor deepens. A measured touch of new oak provides texture and subtle toast without overshadowing the fruit’s brightness.

Tasting profile

  • Appearance: Pale straw in the glass
  • Aroma: Lemon curd, green apple, and jasmine rise from the glass
  • Palate: A citrus-driven core of Meyer lemon peel and lime leaf, animated by a stony mineral edge
  • Finish: A gentle kiss of marzipan and barrel-derived toast that lingers without weight

Why it stands out

This Aries lot showcases the diversity of Sonoma Coast sites—cool mornings and evenings, varied soils, and extended hang time—that collectively contribute freshness, structure, and a true sense of place. The wine’s modest oak influence adds texture and one-layer complexity, while the acidity remains bright and mineral-driven, making it a versatile canvas for seafood and herb-forward dishes.

Food pairings and occasions

  • Grilled halibut with citrus or herb butter
  • Oysters on the half shell
  • Roast chicken with lemon and herbs
93 Points
"A bright straw siler hue, the 2022 Chardonnay Aries comes from the Hawk Hill, Gaps Crown, Durell, and Marine Layer vineyards, as well as a couple other small parcels, and it sees about 20% new oak. Fresh and floral in the glass, it’s showing notes of fresh pear, poached lemon, and wet stone. Medium to full-bodied, it retains good richness while feeling linear and citrus-driven, and it has a core of concentration with a long, lightly pithy finish. It’s very well-styled, and I continue to be impressed with these wines. Drink this over the next 5-7 years."
