A fifth-growth Pauillac run by Xavier Borie that consistently drinks well above its classification, and one of the most reliable values on the Left Bank. Roughly three-quarters Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Merlot. Vinous called the 2012 one of the standout Left Bank wines of the vintage, with a cassis-tinged bouquet, fresh tobacco, and graphite-laced black fruit, medium-bodied with fine tannins and a keen thread of acidity. James Suckling found currants, berries, paprika, and a touch of wasabi, tannic and muscular but still refined, with a lengthy finish. Wine Advocate noted the classic crème de cassis with bluer fruits and floral notes, ripe tannin, and an up-front appeal. Now with over a decade of bottle age, this is a classic, savory Pauillac entering a great drinking window.

91 Points
"Always a favorite among consumers, Xavier Borie's is a fifth-growth Pauillac that consistently performs at a much higher level. The 2012 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has the classic, tell-tale creme de cassis as well as some bluer fruits and floral notes. Medium-bodied, its ripe tannin, beautiful fruit and low acidity give it an up-front appeal. There's no harm in drinking it now or cellaring it for another 12-15+ years."
