2019 Joseph Roty - Mazis Chambertin (750ml)
Domaine Joseph Roty is a small, understated estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, now in its twelfth generation and led by Pierre-Jean Roty. His father Joseph, who died in 2008, was first succeeded by elder son Philippe, and after Philippe's death in 2015 the domaine passed to Pierre-Jean, who continues the family's meticulous, largely non-interventionist approach. Vines are pruned short and farmed with minimal chemical input, which, combined with their age, naturally produces small, concentrated berries. Grapes are fully destemmed with the help of an optical sorter before a week-long cold soak and spontaneous fermentation.
Mazis-Chambertin sits just below the famous Chambertin climat itself, bordering Griotte-Chambertin, on a mix of red clay, chalk, and broken stone. The site's name is thought to trace back to "mazures," a term for the small ruined stone dwellings once found on the slope. In keeping with Roty's approach across the range, the proportion of new oak scales up with each level of the hierarchy, and grand cru cuvées like this one are typically aged in a large share, often 80 to 100 percent, of new barrels before bottling without filtration.
The wine carries savory, meaty undertones alongside cedar and game, layered over ripe black raspberry and dark cherry fruit. The palate is dense, with abundant fine tannin and a licorice-tinged concentration that builds toward a long, structured finish.
