2021 Cobb Wines - Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Old Firs (750ml)
Cobb Wines began when David and Diane Cobb searched the California coast from Santa Cruz to the Oregon border for land near both redwoods and the sea. They settled on a remote stretch of western Sonoma County, built a redwood-framed home, and hand-planted their Coastlands estate vineyard starting in 1989. Their son Ross now farms the property organically, continuing a family project built entirely around this single, wind-swept piece of land.
Old Firs takes its name from an old-growth Douglas fir standing at the edge of the block, planted in 1989 with Martini and Wadenswil clones on marine sedimentary soils at over 1,100 feet. The vineyard has been farmed organically and without tilling since it was first planted. The 2021 was made with 40% whole clusters, a technique that adds structure and a savory, herbal dimension to the wine.
This Pinot Noir shows pomegranate, red cherry, and botanical notes, with cinnamon, tea leaf, and lavender unfurling slowly in the glass. The medium-bodied palate is powerful and concentrated, framed by firm, chalky tannins and driving acidity. It's a wine built for the table, pairing well with herb-roasted lamb, aged gruyere, or cranberry-glazed pork.
